What Type of Pipe Is Used for a Borewell in India?

A borewell uses different pipes for different jobs. One pipe supports the drilled hole, another filters groundwater, and another carries water from the pump to the surface. In India, PVC, UPVC, HDPE and steel pipes are used depending on bore depth, soil condition, water quality and pump requirements. The final choice should always suit the conditions at the site rather than follow a one-size-fits-all approach.

Key Takeaways

• Casing pipes hold the borewell walls up and stop any loose dirt or debris from getting in.
• Strainer pipes help bring in groundwater, but keep the unwanted sand and fine particles out.
• The column pipes deliver the water brought up by the submersible pump to the surface, so they must have appropriate strength and pressure resistance.
• Appropriate pipe sizes are selected according to the borehole depth, soil and water conditions, and the required pump performance to ensure proper operation and service life of the pipes.

What Are the Different Types of Borewell Pipes?

A borewell does not depend on just one pipe. The main borewell pipe types are casing pipes, screen or strainer pipes, and column pipes.

The choice depends on bore depth, ground condition and the type of pump being used.

About Borewell Casing Pipes

A casing pipe is fitted inside the drilled bore to support the wall and reduce the chance of loose soil entering.

UPVC casing pipes are popular because they are light and corrosion-resistant. Steel casing may still be used where greater mechanical strength is needed.

Skipper Pipes offers UPVC casing pipes in Shallow, Medium and Deep variants for different borewell depths.

About Borewell Screen or Strainer Pipes

Screen or strainer pipes are placed where groundwater enters the borewell. Their main work is to allow water through while limiting the entry of sand and various other fine particles.

Skipper Pipes offers ribbed strainer pipes with perforated slots for borewell filtration and tube well applications.

About Borewell Column Pipes

Column pipes connect with the submersible pump and carry water upwards. They need to perform well under the pressure created inside the borewell.

That makes strength, joint quality and pressure rating important. Skipper Column Pipes are designed for submersible pump installations and use threaded joints for secure fitment.

Borewell Column Pipe vs Casing Pipe

Casing and column pipes may both be present in one borewell, but they perform entirely different jobs.

A casing pipe supports the bore wall and helps keep the opening stable. A column pipe carries water from the submersible pump to the surface. Casing selection depends mainly on soil and bore depth, while column pipe selection depends more on pump depth, pressure and load.

How to Choose the Right Borewell Pipe?

The right pipe should be chosen according to the site, not only by price. Borewell conditions can vary even within the same area.

Consider these points:

• Bore depth: Deeper borewells need suitable pressure and load ratings.
• Soil condition: Loose or sandy ground may need stronger casing support.
• Water quality: Corrosive conditions can affect material choice.
• Pump depth: Column pipe should suit the pump load and operating pressure.
• Pipe specification: Check the required standard, size and rating.

What Is the Best Borewell Pipe?

There is no single best pipe for every borewell. What works for a domestic borewell may not suit a much deeper agricultural installation.

UPVC is commonly used for casing and column applications because it is light and corrosion-resistant.

HDPE may suit some water supply and borewell applications, while steel can be used where drilling conditions demand extra strength.

Skipper Pipes manufactures casing, column and ribbed strainer pipes for borewell use.

Borewell Pipe Installation: Key Things to Consider

Correct installation matters as much as pipe selection. Wrong alignment, unsuitable joints or incorrect depth can create issues once the borewell starts working.

So, for best results, check the bore diameter, soil condition and casing depth before work begins. Joints should be secure, the column pipe should match the pump depth, and strainer pipes should be placed where groundwater can enter effectively.

Ground conditions vary from one site to another, so the installation plan should be based on the actual borewell conditions.

Conclusion

A borewell generally uses casing, strainer and column pipes for different purposes. Knowing what each one does makes pipe selection easier.

Bore depth, soil condition, water quality and pump requirements should guide the choice rather than price alone. The pipe also needs to be installed correctly for the system to work as intended. Choosing suitable borewell pipe types for each part of the borewell can support easy water extraction and help avoid unnecessary problems later.

FAQs

1. What are the different types of borewell pipes?
They are casing pipes, screen or strainer pipes and column pipes. The borewell is supported by casing; the strainer pipe filters the groundwater, and the column pipe brings water up to the surface from the pump.

2. Which pipe is used in a borewell?
Can use more than one pipe. The bore is sealed with UPVC or PVC casing pipes, strainer pipes filter the water that comes into the bore, and column pipes carry the water from the submersible pump to the water delivery line. The actual combination will depend on bore depth, ground conditions and the type of pump being installed, however.
