• For commercial buildings, calculate water demand based on the occupancy and the nature of use.
• Always consider these practical factors such as water availability, future requirements and tank dimensions.

How to Calculate Water Tank Capacity?

The simplest way to understand how to calculate water tank capacity is to first determine how much water is required everyday and then decide how many days of water you want to store.

Basic calculation:

Required Water Tank Capacity = Daily Water Requirement × Number of Storage Days

For example, if a family requires approximately 500 litres of water per day and wants one day of backup:
500 × 1 = 500 litres
For two days of storage:
500 × 2 = 1,000 litres

You can then select a tank capacity that meets or slightly exceeds this requirement.

When calculating how to calculate water tank capacity in litres, remember that:

1 cubic metre (m³) = 1,000 litres
Therefore, a tank with a volume of 1.5 m³ has a capacity of approximately 1,500 litres.

Step 1: Calculate Your Daily Water Requirement

The first step is to estimate how much water is consumed by the people using the building.

For a home, a simple calculation is:
Daily Water Requirement = Number of People × Water Requirement Per Person Per Day

For example, for a family of four, if you estimate 135 litres per person per day:
4 × 135 = 540 litres per day

This gives an estimated daily requirement of 540 litres.

Actual consumption can vary depending on the number of bathrooms, cleaning requirements, washing, cooking, gardening and other household activities.
When considering how much water does one person need per day, there is no single number that applies to every household. Water consumption depends on lifestyle, location and usage. For planning purposes, a commonly used benchmark in India is around 135 litres per person per day for many urban residential situations.

Step 2: Decide Storage Duration (1-day vs 2-day)

After calculating daily consumption, decide how much backup you want your tank to provide.

1-Day Storage
A one-day buffer can be suitable where water supply is relatively reliable.
Tank Capacity = Daily Requirement × 1
For a family requiring 540 litres daily:
540 × 1 = 540 litres
A tank around 600 litres may therefore be considered, depending on the actual usage and available tank sizes.

2-Day Storage
If water supply is less predictable or you want additional backup:
Tank Capacity = Daily Requirement × 2
For the same family:
540 × 2 = 1,080 litres

In practice, a 1,000–1,200 litre water tank may be considered based on the household's actual requirements.
Adding a small buffer can also help accommodate occasional increases in consumption.

Step 3: Calculate Tank Volume by Shape

The next step is to understand how to calculate water tank capacity in litres from the tank's physical dimensions.
The calculation depends on the shape of the tank.

Rectangular Tank

For a rectangular tank:
Volume = Length × Width × Height
If the dimensions are measured in metres, the result will be in cubic metres.

For example: Length is 2 m, Width is 1 m and Height is 1 m
Volume:
2 × 1 × 1 = 2 m³
Since 1 m³ = 1,000 litres:
2 m³ = 2,000 litres

Cylindrical Tank

For a cylindrical water tank, the formula for cylindrical water tank volume in cubic meters is:
Volume = π × r² × h
Where: r is radius of the tank, h is height of the tank and π ≈ 3.14
If you have the diameter instead of the radius:
Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Once the volume is calculated in cubic metres, multiply it by 1,000 to convert it into litres.

What Measurements You Need Before Calculating

Before calculating your tank capacity, measure the available space and the tank's dimensions accurately.

The measurements required depend on the tank shape.
For a rectangular tank, you generally need Length, Width, Height
For a cylindrical tank, you need Diameter or radius, Height

Make sure all measurements use the same unit, preferably metres, before calculating volume.

You should also check the installation area for accessibility, structural support, inlet and outlet connections and sufficient clearance for maintenance.
Knowing what measurements I need to calculate a tank's volume accurately can help prevent errors when selecting the appropriate capacity.

Water Tank Capacity for Home Use (Litre-wise Recommendation Table)

The ideal water tank capacity for home use depends on the number of people, daily consumption and desired backup.

Illustrative calculation using 135 litres per person per day. Actual household consumption may vary.
So, if you are looking for the recommended water tank capacity for a family of four in India, a tank in the 750–1,200 litre range can be a practical starting point, depending on water availability and whether you want one or two days of backup.

Water Tank Capacity for Commercial Buildings

How to calculate water tank capacity for commercial building requirements depends on the type of property and the number of people using it.

A basic approach is:
Daily Water Requirement = Number of Users × Estimated Water Requirement Per User
You can then multiply the result by the required number of storage days.

For example, if a commercial facility has 50 users and the estimated requirement is 45 litres per person per day:
50 × 45 = 2,250 litres/day
For two days of storage:
2,250 × 2 = 4,500 litres

However, commercial water requirements can differ significantly between offices, shops, restaurants, schools, hotels and other establishments. Sanitary facilities, food preparation, cleaning and other specific uses should also be considered.
For larger buildings, it is advisable to follow applicable local building and water-supply requirements when determining the final storage capacity.

Tips for Choosing the Right Tank

Once you know how to calculate water tank capacity, consider these factors before choosing the tank:

1. Consider Your Daily Consumption

Don't select a tank based only on the number of people. Consider actual water usage and additional requirements such as cleaning and gardening.

2. Plan for Water Supply Interruptions

If your area experiences irregular water supply, additional storage can provide a useful buffer.

3. Measure the Installation Space

The tank should fit comfortably within the available space while leaving adequate room for installation and maintenance.

4. Consider Future Requirements

For homes or commercial spaces where occupancy may increase, selecting an appropriate additional capacity can avoid the need for an early replacement.
